# How many YEK-G certificates do you need? Green electricity certificate calculator

Enter your annual consumption and renewable target. We calculate how many YEK-G certificates you need to document renewable consumption, and the emissions effect if you add a grid factor.

Annual consumption (kWh)

Renewable target

Own renewable use (kWh)

Emission factor (tCO₂/MWh)

Both fields are optional. One YEK-G certificate represents 1 MWh of renewable generation; renewable energy you generate and consume on site, such as rooftop solar, reduces the certificates needed.

Result

1,200 YEK-G certificates needed per year

Renewable consumption target 1,200 MWh

Covered by on-site generation 0 MWh

Average per month 100

Scope 2 emissions covered (market-based) —

1,200 certificates redeemed in your name document that this share of your consumption came from renewable sources.

With Frekans

We supply your electricity and match it with YEK-G certificates in one contract.

Certificates are redeemed in your name and reported for your sustainability disclosures.

You do not need to register on the YEK-G market or track certificate transfers yourself.

## How the calculation works and which rules apply

Electricity drawn from the grid is a physical mix whose source plant cannot be identified. A business that wants to claim renewable consumption documents it by redeeming, in its own name, renewable guarantees of origin equal to its consumption. In Türkiye this certificate is YEK-G.

## What is a YEK-G certificate

A Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (YEK-G) is an electronic certificate showing that one megawatt-hour was generated from a renewable source. EPİAŞ runs the system. On the generator’s application one certificate is issued per MWh; it is transferred to a buyer and, once redeemed against consumption, cannot be used again.

The certificate is separate from the physical sale of power. A business buying electricity from a supplier can obtain the same amount of YEK-G certificates from that supplier or from the market.

## How many certificates you need

`Certificates = ⌈ Consumption (MWh) × Target − Own renewable consumption (MWh) ⌉`

Consumption annual electricity consumption, MWh Target the renewable share you want to document ⌈ ⌉ rounded up; certificates are whole units

The calculation is a direct ratio: one certificate per MWh. Renewable energy you generate and consume on site, such as rooftop solar, covers part of the target if its environmental attributes are not sold separately, and reduces the certificates needed.

## How to obtain YEK-G certificates

1

Generation A renewable plant feeds energy to the grid; output is metered.

2

Issuance On the generator’s application EPİAŞ issues one YEK-G certificate per MWh.

3

Transfer Certificates are transferred on the organised YEK-G market or bilaterally to a supplier or consumer.

4

Redemption The certificate is used in the consumer’s name for the relevant period and cannot be reused.

5

Reporting Redemption records serve as evidence in sustainability and emissions reporting.

Table 1 Routes to certificates

| Route | Managed by | Effort for the business |
| --- | --- | --- |
| YEK-G backed supply | Supplier | Low: certificates are matched to supply and redeemed in your name |
| Organised YEK-G market | Market participant | High: registration, participation fee and trade tracking |
| Bilateral purchase from a generator | The parties | Medium: contract and transfer to manage |

## 2026 rules and fees

Table 2 YEK-G system, 2026

| Item | Value |
| --- | --- |
| One certificate | 1 MWh of renewable generation |
| System operator | EPİAŞ |
| Trading fee | 1.00 TL/MWh |
| Annual participation fee | 3,000 TL |
| Organised market | Trading windows announced monthly by EPİAŞ |

Fees follow the 2026 tariff approved by EPDK and exclude VAT. They apply to direct market participants.

## Why it matters: Scope 2 and supply chains

In corporate emissions reporting, indirect emissions from electricity are reported as Scope 2. Under the GHG Protocol market-based method, renewable consumption is shown with guarantees of origin like these. Consumption without certificates is reported at the grid average.

For manufacturers exporting to the European Union, this documentation is becoming a commercial requirement. The EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and large buyers’ supply chain targets ask suppliers to document their energy sources.

> Saying you use green power is not enough; each megawatt-hour has to be shown with a certificate redeemed in your name.

Certificates = annual consumption (MWh). Consumption values are examples.

## An illustrative calculation

Take a factory consuming 12,000 MWh a year, self-consuming 1,500 MWh from rooftop solar and wanting to document all of its consumption as renewable.

| Item | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Annual consumption | 12,000 MWh |
| Target | 100% |
| Rooftop solar self-consumption | 1,500 MWh |
| YEK-G certificates needed | 10,500 |
| Average per month | 875 |

Illustrative calculation. Assumes the rooftop solar attributes are not sold separately.

## What it means for businesses

The simplest route to YEK-G certificates is a supplier offering certificate-backed supply. Electricity and certificates come under one contract, certificates are redeemed in your name and records are ready for reporting.

You can set the target in stages: document part of consumption now and all of it in later years. Because the number of certificates is proportional to consumption, budgeting is straightforward.

In short

01 One YEK-G certificate represents 1 MWh of renewable generation and is issued by EPİAŞ.

02 Certificates needed equal annual consumption times the target, minus your own renewable consumption.

03 A certificate redeemed in your name proves your renewable consumption.

04 In 2026 the YEK-G trading fee is 1.00 TL/MWh and the annual participation fee 3,000 TL.

05 For exporters to the EU, documentation in Scope 2 reporting is becoming a commercial requirement.

At Frekans we supply your electricity and match and report your consumption with YEK-G certificates. We can work out together how many certificates your target needs and what certificate-backed supply costs.
